Light With Care: Tips to Make the Most of Your Retrovert Candle

Candle Care Tips: How to Get the Best Burn from Your Retrovert Candle

At Retrovert Candles, we craft each candle with clean, coconut-apricot wax, 100% cotton wicks, and vintage-inspired designs. We believe every flame should be a fun little moment in time — a moment of calm, beauty, and warmth wrapped in vintage-inspired design, thoughtful craftsmanship, and sustainable materials.

To enjoy the longest-lasting, cleanest burn and the best fragrance experience, proper candle care is essential.

This guide explains not just how to care for your candle, but why each step matters — helping you understand your candle’s behavior and get the most from every burn.

Why Our Coconut-Apricot Wax is a Bit Unique

Because we pour each candle in small batches using our signature coconut-apricot wax (and pair it with a 100% cotton wick), your candle behaves a little differently than a typical soy or paraffin candle.

Coconut-apricot wax is a premium, eco-friendly blend known for:

  • Clean burning: produces less soot than traditional paraffin or soy wax.

  • Even fragrance release: holds scent oils effectively for a consistent aroma.

  • Longer burn times: melts slowly, maximizing your candle’s life.

  •  Because of its structure, in early burns, you may notice some wax sticking to the sides of the jar (sometimes called “wax hang-up”). That’s totally normal. As the candle burns more deeply and the jar warms evenly, the remaining wax will gradually melt away — often leaving little to no waste.

  • That means the first burn really matters. A proper first melt helps ensure even burning and optimal scent throw for the candle’s full lifetime.

First Burn & Burn Time: Do It Right from the Start

  • When you light your candle for the first time: burn it for 2–3 hours if it’s an 8.5 oz jar. Let the melted wax reach the edges of the jar — that helps prevent tunneling and encourages a full melt pool down the line.

  • It’s completely normal if the wax pool doesn’t hit the edge until half the candle is gone. This is typical for coconut-apricot wax.

  • For regular burns, keep sessions to no more than 3–4 hours at a time. Let the wax cool and solidify fully before relighting.

  • Before each burn, trim the wick to about ¼ inch. This helps control the flame and reduce soot.

  • If a little carbon “mushroom” forms on top of the wick — that charcoal-looking tip — trim it off before relighting.

  • Keep the wax pool free of wick trimmings or other debris. This helps prevent irregular burning or smoke.

Scent & Burn Performance: Let Your Candle Shine

  • For best fragrance throw, allow your candle to burn 1–2 hours to warm up fully so the wax pool can release the scent.

  • Avoid placing your candle near drafts — windows, vents, fans — as airflow can cause flickering or uneven melting.

Extinguishing & Cooling: Do It Safely

  • Use a snuffer to put out the flame — this helps avoid smoke, soot, or wax splatter.

  • Do not blow out your candle — air blasts can cause wax splatter and uneven cooling.

  • Never use water to extinguish a candle: it can crack the glass and cause hot wax to splatter — a potential hazard.

  • Let the candle cool completely before moving it. If the wax has softened, you can gently re-center the wick before the next burn.

Storing & Caring Between Burns

  • When not in use, store your candle in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight or heat. This helps preserve the fragrance and prevents the wax from “sweating.”

  • Avoid exposing the candle to large temperature swings — stability helps keep both scent and appearance long-lasting.
