Candle Care Guidelines

How to Get the Most Out of Your Retrovert Candle

Thank you for choosing Retrovert Candles. Each candle is hand-poured in small batches using eco-friendly, toxin-free coconut apricot wax—a luxurious, non-GMO alternative to traditional soy or paraffin. This premium wax burns differently, so a little extra care goes a long way toward maximizing your candle’s beauty, longevity, and scent performance.

Coconut Apricot Wax Is Different - Unlike soy wax, coconut apricot wax does not tunnel—even if it appears to at first. You may notice some wax “hang-up” on the sides of the jar early on. This is completely normal. As the candle burns deeper, the jar heats more evenly and the remaining wax will gradually melt away, leaving little to no waste.

Safety First - To prevent fire or injury, always:

  • Burn within sight – never leave a lit candle unattended

  • Keep away from flammable objects – curtains, paper, or décor

  • Keep away from children and pets

  • Only burn on a level, heat-resistant surface

  • Never use water to extinguish a candle

  • Allow the candle to cool completely before relighting or moving

First Burn – Most Important - Your candle’s first burn sets the tone for the rest of its life.

  • Burn your candle for 2–3 hours (8.5 oz) or 3–4 hours (14 oz) during the first use

  • Allow the melted wax to reach the edges of the jar to help prevent tunneling

  • A full melt pool may not occur until you're halfway down the candle—this is normal for coconut apricot wax

Wick Maintenance - Proper wick care ensures a clean, even flame and reduces soot:

  • Trim the wick to ¼ inch before each burn

  • If a small carbon "mushroom" forms at the tip, trim it off before relighting

  • Keep the wax pool free of wick trimmings and debris

Burn Time & Scent Performance

  • Do not burn your candle for more than 3–4 hours at a time

  • Allow the wax to cool fully between burns

  • For best scent throw, give the candle 1–2 hours to fully warm up

  • Avoid drafts (open windows, vents, or fans), which can cause uneven burning or flickering

After You Burn

  • Let the wax fully cool and solidify before moving the candle

  • Re-center the wick if necessary while the wax is still soft

  • Store in a cool, dry place—away from direct sunlight or heat—to preserve fragrance and prevent wax sweating

Extinguishing Tips

  • Use a snuffer to extinguish your candle cleanly and to minimize smoke

  • Avoid blowing out the flame, which can cause soot and wax splatter

  • Never use water—it may crack the glass and create hot wax splatter

Burn Time

  • 8.5 oz candles burn approximately 45–55 hours

  • 14 oz candles burn approximately 65–80 hours

By following these simple steps, you’ll enjoy a safe, clean, and beautifully fragrant experience—just as it was meant to be.
