William Morris and the Arts & Crafts Movement: Why His Designs Continue to Inspire

More than a century after his death, William Morris remains one of the most influential figures in the history of art and design. His intricate botanical patterns, flowing vines, stylized flowers, and commitment to exceptional craftsmanship helped shape an entire design movement and continue to inspire artists, decorators, and makers around the world today.

At Retrovert Candles, we celebrate Morris's enduring legacy through a collection of handcrafted candles featuring artwork inspired by some of his most beloved designs. To understand why these patterns remain so popular, it helps to first understand the man behind them.

Who Was William Morris?

Born in England in 1834, William Morris was a designer, writer, poet, craftsman, and social reformer. During the Industrial Revolution, mass-produced goods were becoming increasingly common. While this made products more affordable and widely available, Morris believed something important was being lost: craftsmanship, artistry, and the human touch.

Determined to restore beauty and quality to everyday life, Morris founded a decorative arts company in 1861 that produced handcrafted furniture, textiles, wallpapers, stained glass, tapestries, and books. His work emphasized thoughtful design, natural beauty, and skilled craftsmanship—principles that would become the foundation of the Arts & Crafts Movement.

The Arts & Crafts Movement

The Arts & Crafts Movement emerged in the late nineteenth century as a response to industrialization and machine-made production. Morris and his contemporaries believed that well-made objects could enrich people's lives and that beauty should be accessible beyond museums and aristocratic homes.

The movement championed:

  • Handcrafted workmanship

  • Natural materials

  • Functional beauty

  • Inspiration from nature

  • Timeless design over passing trends

These ideas influenced generations of designers and continue to resonate today as consumers increasingly seek authenticity, sustainability, and artisan-made products.

Morris's Love of Nature

One of the reasons William Morris's work remains so beloved is his extraordinary ability to translate the beauty of nature into decorative art.

Drawing inspiration from English gardens, forests, flowers, birds, and plant life, Morris created patterns filled with movement, depth, and intricate detail. His designs often reward closer inspection, revealing layers of leaves, blossoms, vines, and wildlife woven together in harmonious compositions.

Unlike many Victorian-era designs that can feel dated, Morris's work possesses a timeless quality that feels just as relevant today as it did more than 150 years ago.

William Morris-Inspired Candles at Retrovert Candles

At Retrovert Candles, we honor Morris's artistic vision through a collection of candles featuring artwork inspired by some of his most recognizable and enduring designs. Each label celebrates the beauty of historic decorative arts while pairing timeless imagery with our handcrafted coconut-apricot wax candles.

Cottage Garden

Inspired by Morris's celebrated floral wallpaper designs, Cottage Garden captures the abundance and beauty of an English garden in bloom. Rich botanical details, winding vines, and layered floral elements reflect the naturalistic style that made Morris famous and continue to bring warmth and elegance to interiors today.

Verdant

Verdant showcases the lush foliage and flowing botanical forms that are hallmarks of Arts & Crafts design. Drawing inspiration from Morris's textile patterns, this design celebrates nature's beauty through carefully balanced composition and intricate decorative detail.

Morris

Our Morris candle highlights one of the designer's classic floral motifs, featuring the graceful tulips, leaves, and organic movement that define much of his work. The design embodies the craftsmanship, balance, and decorative richness that helped establish Morris as one of the most important designers in history.

Strawberry Garden

One of the highlights of our William Morris collection is Strawberry Garden, inspired by Morris's iconic Strawberry Thief pattern.

Originally created in 1883, Strawberry Thief was inspired by the thrushes Morris observed stealing strawberries from the gardens of Kelmscott Manor, his beloved country home. The design features birds nestled among strawberry plants, flowers, and winding foliage, combining detailed observation of nature with decorative artistry.

Today, Strawberry Thief remains one of the most famous textile patterns ever created and is considered a masterpiece of the Arts & Crafts Movement. Strawberry Garden pays tribute to this beloved design and brings its timeless beauty into the modern home.

Why William Morris Still Matters

William Morris believed that beautiful things should not be reserved for special occasions or displayed only in galleries. He believed that the objects we use and enjoy every day should enrich our lives and reflect thoughtful craftsmanship.

That philosophy continues to inspire us at Retrovert Candles.

Each of our candles is handcrafted using sustainable coconut-apricot wax, cotton wicks, and phthalate-free fragrances, paired with carefully curated artwork inspired by some of history's most influential artists and designers. Like Morris, we believe that beauty, craftsmanship, and quality matter.

More than 125 years after his passing, William Morris's influence can still be found in homes, museums, textiles, wallpapers, books, and decorative arts around the world. His work reminds us that great design is timeless and that even the simplest everyday objects can become sources of beauty, inspiration, and joy.
